Pay Per Click Advertising - A First Look

by Brian Basch

There are several ways to do pay per click advertising. If you do not use caution you will end up losing a lot of money. Even though you are not making sales your advertising is costing you money. So how to do this correctly so that you can really get your money’s worth?

The success of your pay per click advertising depends on keywords. You can get warm ready to buy customers with a good selection of keywords. You will make plenty of sales and make good money. However if you pick the wrong keywords your campaign may not give you any sales in spite of the fact that you could be paying top dollar for the keywords.

There are vast arrays of tools you can use to help you select the correct keywords. A good rule of thumb is to avoid non targeted expensive keywords, especially if they are going to break your budget. Examples of these are “work at home” and “home based business,” which are highly competitive and expensive. It is good not to start campaign in these fields to begin with. This is because pay per click advertising in these markets will cost a lot of money to be successful. Plus you will not be sure that it will be cost effective.

Finding a niche within a saturated market is a sound strategy. Do not use a popular general word like “football” for your keywords. This is because people using this keyword may not even be interested in sports clothing. Instead use a more exact keyword like “team XX clothing.” This will attract targeted buyers.

In addition to this strategy, you might want to use different ad campaigns. If you have more than Kansas City Chiefs items, you might do a different ad campaign for every team in the NFL. The ads will rotate according to your predetermined budget and goals. This strategy will work much better than the general keywords like “football”, or “NFL”.

Another smart way to find keywords is by looking at your web logs. Here you will find out which keywords are being used by your visitors to find your website. You can use these same ones for your pay per click advertising campaigns.
