Three Steps to Copywriting

by C S Punch

Do you have to compose written material to publicise your new service?

Are you struggling to find the right words to promote your revolutionary new product?

Here are three steps which may help you to write effective promotional material.

Step One

Enter your potential customer’s mindset, identify what they want (relevant to your service or product) and make a list.

For instance, do your customers want more time? Do they need to save money? Are they looking for something that will give them more energy? Do they want to lose weight?

What would be their main goal for using your product or service?

Step Two

Make a list of all the features of your product or service.

Emphasise the benefits, advantages and what makes it unique. Are there any unusual technological features or cutting-edge techniques? Is your invention or the style of the service you provide drawn from your own life experiences?

Step Three

Connect your customer’s dreams (whether it be beauty, wealth, energy, relaxation) with the benefits of your product or service and demonstrate how your product or service can help to solve or improve their situation.

You could even draw lines between your two lists to connect the customer’s dream or ideal in the first list with a feature or advantage in your second list.

When you come to drafting your material, items from your list in Step One could form the basis of your introduction while Steps Two and Three combined can form the main content of your webpage, article or leaflet.

Bonus Step

If you like, you can also tell your customer how you came up with your idea, or how and when you noticed a gap in the market or briefly describe a personal life experience which inspired you to create your organisation, manufacture your product or provide your service.
